Nutritionally, breast milk is perfect for baby, it has just what they need. In addition, it gives them protection against infections to which they or their mom have been exposed. Breastfeeding has also been shown to give long term protection against illnesses later in life such as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. Studies have even demonstrated that breastfeeding may increases baby’s IQ! These are only some of the advantages for baby.

So what’s in it for mom? First of all, breastfeeding helps immediately after birth to bring the uterus back to its pre-pregnancy size. This decreases postpartum bleeding. Women who breastfeed reduce their risk of developing breast cancer, ovarian cancer and hypertension among other diseases. There are also mental health and emotional benefits.
